What I Ate Wednesday #30

Happy Wednesday! I hope you are having a great week!

I can’t believe it, but it has been 3 weeks…yes, three weeks since I have done a WIAW post! It doesn’t feel as if it has been that long, but I didn’t post the week after my marathon since I stayed in AZ longer than planned and last week was computer trouble! I am so sorry! I am very happy to be back and sharing with you again! I know, you are probably going to think that my meals look the same as they always do, BUT I just can’t seem to be getting enough brussels sprouts and kabocha squash! I seriously think I am addicted to them! I eat them with almost ever meal! Over the weekend I was even having such a huge kabocha squash craving that I topped it with some nut butter for dessert! What am I going to do when it goes out of season?! You are going to have to suggest another substitute for me! :)

In the mean time, let’s take a look at some of yesterday’s meals!

Meal #1

february 4th meal 2

(Before my workout) Banana and a new recipe I was taste testing! :)

Meal #2

Sorry guys, forgot to take a picture, but after my workout I had a protein shake with coconut milk, whey protein and frozen cherries all blended into a big cup of deliciousness! :)

Meal #3

february 4th meal 1

Next up, egg and egg white omelet with 2 slices of paleo bread (one half topped with melted banana and the other with coconut manna), half an avocado and a whole bowl of sauteed shaved brussels sprouts!

Meal #4

february 4th meal 5

A bowl (yes, I like to use plastic bowls, don’t you? ;) ) of spaghetti squash, roasted brussels sprouts, cranberries, baked chicken breast and walnuts (I put those on after the picture) with some braggs seasoning!

Meal #5

february 4th meal 4

Turkey burger with mexican seasoning (Frontier, no salt), half an avocado, broccoli, kale and a big chunk of kabocha!

Meal #6

february 4th meal 3

Yup! It’s back!! Greek yogurt mixed with pb casein (then frozen) and topped with 1.5tbs of almond butter! This never tasted as good as it did last night! :)

**For those of you who were aware that I started a 30 day paleo challenge on February 1st, you are probably questioning my meals today. Well, I attempted the meal plan for 3 days and I never felt worse in my life! I had no energy, my hunger was all over the place (either I was starving or I was sooo full I couldn’t even think about food), my skin was breaking out, I would wake up every morning feeling like I ate a pizza the night before (from the higher fat intake) and my calcium was pretty much non-existent, which we know is very unhealthy! After 3 days, I did notice my mid section was tighter and a bit more defined and I did not crave and/or miss any of the things restricted on this plan, however, the other side effects just weren’t worth it. I know what my body likes and feels is right and what it doesn’t like. So, I did what was best for myself and stopped. NOW, don’t get me wrong, as you saw in the above pictures, other than 1/2 a scoop of whey protein and 1c of greek yogurt, all else was paleo. This is how I was eating for the most part before and plan to continue to eat since I feel best this way.

This is what works for me!! We each need to find what works for our own body as each of us is different! It’s important to really listened to your body and give it what it needs as far as fuel, exercise and rest.

I love that you listened to your bod!!! So many on Paleo out there but there is no one right way! Yes, restricting a lot of foods that are not allowed on that plan will lead to a leaner you BUT if you don’t feel good & it does not work with your bod, better to do what is best for you! I have always done my own thing – never really followed a diet. I read stuff & then modify for me & what I know I can live with long term…

THANK YOU JODY!!! I 100% agree that there is no single “right” way to eat. I have always done the same….read stuff and modify it for my body too! It is about a lifestyle, not a quick diet! No meal plan is worth feeling horrible for!! Hearing this from YOU means even more too….my beautiful #Fitfluential Fit friend ;)

I’ve been so obsessed with food lately. Winter + most stressful week of my semester = All the food. Also, I’ve never heard of someone putting melted banana on toast! Banana- yes, melted- no. TOTALLY trying that asap.

First off Jess, so happy your comment didn’t go to spam! ;) Stress and the cold can definitely make you crave food! Melted banana is amazing! I always keep a bag of sliced bananas in a freezer bag. Then I grab a few, pop them in the microwave and bam!! Melted banana in 30 seconds! :)

GIRL we are foodie twins right know LOL!! My obsession with Brussel sprouts and Kabocha squash is becoming a joke in my family. I cannot get enough of either and unfortunately brussel’s are expensive in my neck of the woods but I can’t say no. HMM may have to look into freezing a good supply of Kabocha squash. Wonder if that would work.

Have a beautiful day and thank you for the fabulous WIAW yummy post!!!

MINE TOO!!! Hahahaha I told my sister that I had just written my WIAW post on Tuesday night and she said, ” so you mean kabocha and brussels?” hahaha LOVE IT Luvena! ;) If you try freezing kabocha, let me know! I may do it too if you say it works!! Have an amazing day! :)

I bought my first EVER kaboucha squash. I know I’m so late to the party, but I figured it’s worth trying to see what all the fuss is about. I’ve been consuming a lot of sweet potatoes lately. Nothing too interesting though…Glad you got off that challenge. Those side effects sound horrible!

You MUST tell me what you think as soon as you try it Katie!! I am sooooo excited!! You will love it! Especially since you love sweet potatoes! ;)

Just found your blog today . . . congrats on your recent marathon! Love your eats for the day–winter squash is one of my favorite veggies–especially kabocha! Glad you’re finding what type of diet works best for YOU. :)

Thank you so much for the congrats Michelle!! I am glad to see another kabocha lover….I am addicted! Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day! :)

So glad you’re back at it with WIAW, I love ogling your eats–because I can never get enough brussels or kabocha either (and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with squash for dessert! Or at least I hope not…)

As for hit-or-miss diets– Yup, I tried a low-fat nutrition plan once, within days my body and moods were so unhappy, my skin and hair were dead, and I had absolutely no energy. I think I’d do equally bad with a high-fat all-paleo option, but I definitely need at least 20% fat (if we get all macro about it) to be happy.

Sarah February 7, 2013 at 6:04 AM

Thanks Allie!! I went to the specialty grocery store the other day and they had kabocha for $1.49/lb!!!??? I thought of you right away when you said yours was $1/lb!! THAT is a prime example of why the asian markets and farmers markets are so much better….$79/lb! I’ll take that thanks! haha

Isn’t it crazy how our bodies tell us within a short period when something isn’t right?! And yes, like you (if we get all macro) I need at least 25% fat, but NOT 40+% haha!!!

Allie February 7, 2013 at 2:00 PM

Woah expensive! Okay, now I’m back to thinking my squash is a good deal ;) And it IS amazing how fast you can notice results–I really couldn’t believe it when my hair went all dead after just three days, that doesn’t seem like something that would be affected so quickly! I’ve never experimented on the higher-fat end, I know it works for some people, but I just love my carbs and have never had a problem with them, so they’re staying put!

Sarah February 8, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Carbs are so essential girl! I would take them over extra fats any day girl!! I love them too….especially in the squash form! :)

I am a kabocha and brussels lover too! I hadn’t been able to find kabocha here for about a month, then finally saw some at Whole Foods last week and bought 3. So yum!

And I tried Paleo last year to help with my digestive issues (IBS). It set off the worst IBS flare-up I had ever had and took me months to get over. I was in pain and looked 5 months pregnant all the time, and my doctor even sent me to the ER because he thought I had a bowel obstruction (sorry if that’s TMI!). In October, I cut out gluten and meat/poultry/fish and felt better than I have in years. I added fish back into my diet recently, but still not other meats. It is SO true that no eating plan is one-size-fits-all! You’ve got to ignore the fads and listen to your own body ;) . I still don’t eat a lot of grains, though, because that’s how I feel best!

I am so sorry to hear about the pain that paleo put you in Brooke! However, I am really happy to hear that you have found a meal plan that works for YOUR body! THAT is key! I am so happy to know I have another kabocha and brussels lover by my side ;) I am totally addicted…and I always buy 3 at a time too! Thanks for stopping by and commenting girl! Have an awesome day! :)

I hear a lot of people say that they have that reaction to paleo. Good for you for listening to your body and doing what’s right for you!

Very cute blog btw!

Yum, you seriously need to start a meal planning business because I’d love one of your dishes any day! My body had a similar reaction to the paleo diet when I first started too- I was just really tired all the time and my brain couldn’t function properly. Low carb isn’t for everyone and it’s definitely more important to find a healthy balance than walk through the day like a zombie! Sky xx

I am so happy to hear that I am not alone with how I felt Sky! And I actually DO create meal plans! :) I just do not advertise it on my blog! Feel free to email me if you’d like! :) Have a great day girl!

I’ve never tried freezing my greek yogurt + casein combo! I always think it’d get too icy and tasteless… I should give it a shot though!

Reply

Sarah February 7, 2013 at 5:57 AM

It is amazing Shreya! Only freeze it for 60-90 minutes max though! Let me know if you try it! :)
